There was a certain episode in Udon Thani history when Thai people learned to absorb a foreign culture into their ways of life. By extension, they adapted to the changes in their town. It was during this interval in history that the lives of the American GIs were deeply interconnected with the locals. Both sides adapted in order to combine their differences and live alongside each other.
“Every party must come to an end.” Finally, the time came when the departure of the GIs pushed the Udon Thani people to adapt all over again into what they used to be before all this happened.
Today, images of that historic past live on as memories that remain alongside new structures built over all that once was. But, even now, the word “G.I.” has never faded from the bond that still holds people’s memories together.
