The heroes featured in the Three Kingdoms have been idealised and even worshipped in many aspects. Guan Yu is an example of a character who was glorified to such an extent after his death that he became deified through generations of storytelling. His deeds and moral qualities have made Guan Yu one of East Asia’s most popular symbols of loyalty and righteousness. Across the five continents, Guan Yu is worshipped in Chinese folk religion, popular Confucianism, Taoism, and Chinese and Mahayana Buddhism, to the point where there is a saying that the fragrance of incense will never fade wherever there are shrines dedicated to Guan Yu. We follow the journey of the Three Kingdoms hero-turned-deity from his place of birth, and all the way to the Three Kingdoms communities in Bangkok.
