Throughout world history, the structuring of civilisation meant that any human collective held the potential of being a nest for disease. Transmission of many viruses occurs by direct contact, or by an indirect transmission through the environment. The role of these environments as intermediaries or as reservoirs in virus transmission has been most clearly proven in recent times. The proof lies in the fact that the faster and more efficiently people travel, the more thoroughly the virus spreads and adapts to new environments, to the point of becoming a global pandemic. The more we learn about ancient pandemics, the more information is assembled that will help us to better predict pandemics of the future. When the time comes for the world to establish new settings in which some form of balance is accomplished, we must be prepared to adapt to new ways while carrying the valuable lessons acquired from the old ways.
